BREED

The Border Terrier breed originates from the areas of England and Scotland. Its origins date back to the 1880s. Borders were used for hunting rodents, foxes, and other pests that threatened agricultural crops in that region, as well as for herding on farms. This breed was valued for its courage, intelligence, agility, and ability to work in difficult terrain and unfavorable conditions. During wartime, they were also utilized by the military, serving as guard dogs.

In the breed standard defining the characteristics of the Border Terrier, phrases such as "Capable of tracking a horse, combining activity with determination" are included. These are quite obvious statements, but they indicate that the breed is geared towards endurance and achieving a certain speed. However, they are not sprinter dogs and are not predisposed to high speeds.

Initially, dogs belonging to this population were diverse in appearance, but over time, breeders began to strive for uniformity in their characteristics. In 1920, the breed standard was established, defining the characteristic external appearance and temperament of the Border Terrier. This breed was officially recognized in 1920 by the British Kennel Club. In the same year, The Border Terrier Club was established in the United Kingdom.

Today, the Border Terrier is primarily valued as a companion and show dog. It is appreciated for its intelligence, energy, and friendly disposition. While this breed is still used for hunting, Border Terriers are increasingly seen as beloved family and household pets.

Another sentence that defines the character of dogs of this breed is: "Capable of gripping with two hands behind the shoulders". This has its specific connotation, indicating that the Border Terrier should be able to go underground and follow a fox into any place it could enter. Foxes are not large and can get into fairly small spaces. Border Terriers are expected to be able and willing to do the same. Another distinctive characteristic of the breed, stemming from its purpose, is the fact that while a Border must be "determined" underground, it absolutely cannot be aggressive towards other dogs.
